明治5年太政官布告によって、通常礼服として燕尾服が制定される。フロックコートやモーニングコートが通常服の扱いである。明治22年勲章佩用心得によれば勲章は大礼服、通常礼服時に佩用し、通常礼服では大綬を上衣の下に入れる。使用しているステッキはロベール・ド・モンテスキューの肖像画にも見られるアールヌーヴォースタイルの19世紀終わりに流行ったτ字のもの。

The tail coat used for civil formal dress enacted in 1872 in Japan. The sash of Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers is equipped under the coat. The τ handle walking stick is the Art Nouveau style seen in the late 19th century.
